Instead of putting a movie on for your children, there are several videos you can purchase that teach aerobics for kids entertainment. Most of these videos are fun, exciting and feature low-impact safe movements that your children can focus on while you make dinner, or get work done around the house.

It’s a well-known, proven fact that everything we do in adulthood has it’s start in childhood. Eating habits, exercise habits, how we interact with people, etc. — are all a result of what we learn in childhood. Teaching your children to exercise, rather than sit in front of the television is one of the best health lessons you can give them, other than healthy eating habits.

It All Started With Barney

Does everyone remember the big cuddly, purple-colored Barney the dinosaur? While he is known for the trademark song “I love you, you love me” he was also instrumental in teaching the children of that generation about proper diet and leading them along in specific routines designed around aerobics for kids. Many adults make fun of the furry fella, but there is no question how instrumental such videos can be in a child’s physical health.

The Barney franchise has fueled several spin-offs, such as Franny’s Feet, who focus on inspiring your kids to get active, among other things.

There are many aerobics programs on throughout the day, that focus on everyday movements you can do with your children also. With that in mind; many parents love the idea of giving their kids something they can do with little supervision and videos that teach aerobics for kids are ideal, to make sure they won’t be encouraged to do things that are dangerous.

Interactive Gaming Consoles

The Nintendo Wii gaming console has taken virtual reality gaming and put it into a kid-friendly format. Each game requires players to get active and there are many aerobics-style games that are made with exercise and fun in mind.

Parents reading this may not be surprised by the latest findings from a team of researchers at the Georgia School of Medicine. The first-of-its-kind study published in the November issue of Pediatric Exercise Science, a professional journal dedicated to increasing our understanding of exercise during childhood, finds that aerobic activity seems to have a significant impact on anger management for kids.

In fact, aerobic exercise may be an effective strategy to help overweight kids (maybe even children at any weight) to burn off anger or aggression in a safe, healthy, and rather effective way. Earlier research has shown that exercise helps to reduce depression or anxiety in children. Most of us have long since come to recognize that exercise can also help older folks manage stress and burn off bad moods.

The latest research focused on a structured aerobic exercise program as it related to anger expression in healthy overweight kids. The scientists looked at 208 usually sedentary 7- to 11-year-olds who took part in a 10-15 week after-school aerobic exercise program.

The subjects, overweight but otherwise healthy, were randomly assigned to an aerobic exercise program or instructed to maintain their normal inactive routine. Surveys were also taken on anger expression at the start and end of the testing using the Pediatric Anger Expression Scale that gauges common expressions of anger like slamming doors and hitting.

The researchers found that the Anger Out and Anger Expression scores were lower for the aerobic exercise group at the end of the testing period.

“Exercise had a significant impact on anger expression in children,” said Dr. Catherine Davis, a clinical health psychologist in the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine. “This finding indicates that aerobic exercise may be an effective strategy to help overweight kids reduce anger expression and aggressive behavior.”

The finding applies across the board – without regard for gender, race, socioeconomic status and even fitness level. This serves as yet another reason for parents, caregivers and teachers to get kids up and moving. Regular exercise seems not only to help with weight and anger issues, but it also may improve cognition and reduce insulin resistance.

This latest research supports earlier work by Dr. Davis that suggested aerobic exercise also helps thinking skills and reduces insulin resistance, a condition known to be a precursor to diabetes. And while the increase in activity did help the subjects of the study lose some weight, all of them continued to be classified as overwight at the end of the research.

Supported by a five year $3.6 million grant by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Dr. Davis is looking to see if this exercise finding holds for a similar group of kids who are being studied for the impact of exercise on cognition.

Scientists want to be sure the exercise, and not other things like participation in a special after-school problem, caused the improvement in the anger scores. Changes in their routine, time with parents and away from fight-provoking siblings, violent TV and video games could also have had a positive impact on anger management for kids.

In many countries in the Western world, there is an obesity epidemic in children that is becoming more and more serious. With the advent of television, computers and video games, and now the Internet, most people, particularly children, are leading more sedentary lives. This has resulted in children getting less and less exercise, therefore gaining more and more weight. Therefore, children need to get more aerobic exercise as a way of combating this growing (no pun intended) epidemic.

Another reason for aerobic exercise for children is that they require it while they are growing and developing. Aerobic exercise will ensure their muscles get strong, as well as allowing their heart and lungs to develop fully.

Along with this new lifestyle, the eating habits of children are gradually worsening. Because junk food is so convenient, children would rather eat that than healthy foods and be quite apathetic to their own long-term health.

Are your children getting the right amount of exercise? Unless you are a fitness professional, chances are you may not be sure. You want to make sure they get enough exercise, but not to the point where their development will be adversely affected. However, if you have a concern about the amount of exercise they are getting, there are several things you can do as a parent.

The first rule is that there will be a limit as to how much television and computer they are allowed to use during the day. There is no reason for kids to be inside if there are dozens of things to do outside (assuming it isn’t raining!). When outside, encourage your kids to do things that physical exercise. Why not climb tress with their friends? What about going for long walks in any local park? There are so many fun, enjoyable activities to do outside that are perfectly safe. In addition to getting physical exercise, doing physical things such as climbing trees or building forts (or building tree forts!) will not only encourage your children to use mental skills, it is also a great way for kids to exercise their social skills with the other kids of the neighbourhood. The important part of this rule (as a parent) is that this rule is to be enforced at all times.

The next thing you want to do is have a rule about always eating healthy at home, and this rule is also to be enforced at ALL times! This rule not only applies to the kids, but also to the parents as well, as you will be seen to be setting a good example. However, if your children are getting sufficient exercise and eating a healthy diet, the odd night of pizza for dinner will not be damaging. It’s only when those nights happen at least 2 or 3 times a week will be bad.

The final rule is that no one eats in front of the television or computer. This will have the added effect of having quality family time together while eating together at the table. This way, any problems the kids have can be discussed at the table.

If your kids don’t want to go outside or are new to the neighbourhood, why not have a family exercise day, where the entire family does some sort of physical activity together. That way, everyone in the family will be getting a good amount of aerobic exercise and not just the children.

There is an increasingly apparent epidemic in the Western world, where kids are gradually becoming obese do to a complete lack of aerobic exercise. It is crucial that kids get a sufficient amount of aerobic exercise as a way of not only preventing obesity, but also the long-term health effects that will accompany your children when they reach adulthood. So why not tell your kids to turn off the TV, the computer and their video games right now and go outside to get some exercise. As parents, you need to explain the short-term and long-term advantages to them. Their lives will depend on it!
